How it all Started
West Horndon Art Group in Essex, was founded in 1992 by Mrs Iris Kelly when a group of six artists from West Horndon met in her garden. By September of that year the group had grown and it moved to the committee room in the Village Hall.
Over the years this Essex art group has gone from strength to strength. It now has around 60 active Members meeting twice a week in West Horndon Village Hall. We paint on either Wednesday or Saturday mornings, or both, from 10.00 – 12.30 pm.
We have been tutored by Frederick Noakes and Jean Willis B.A.(Hons), (Fine Arts) M.Ed.(Art Ed.) our Art Director. Other members tutor on occasions. We usually have two or three tutored sessions per month, and in 2016 we will have three special tutorials given by visiting professional artists.
If you are looking for a tutor to help you personally, an artist to tutor a group, someone to run a studio workshop, give a demonstration, speak on the subject of fine art, or you wish to commission a painting, we may be able help. Please e-mail your requirements to our Secretary.
Members paint in watercolours, acrylics, oil and soft pastels, water-based oils, Conté crayons, art pens, pencils and more. Our preferences of styles and genres are varied, so browse the Artists Showcase to see for yourself.
We exhibit in many local libraries and in the last year, for example, we have exhibited at Smiths Orchard Garden Centre in Grays, Bedfords Park in Havering-atte-Bower and at the Queen’s Theatre in Hornchurch.
On Saturday November 21st 2015, we held our annual ‘Art Event’, in the Village Hall, by far our biggest and best yet. There were over 200 original paintings for sale, demonstrations in oil acrylic an watercolour, artists at easel, and 17 paintings were sold.
Several Members have held successful personal exhibitions in art galleries locally, elsewhere in the UK, and abroad.
Paintings for Sale
We have paintings for sale. Please contact us if you are interested in a any particular work. Members have exhibited successfully in Art Galleries both locally and abroad.
We hold half-day seminars with visiting artists or visit other artists’ studios to receive instruction. These sessions are usually followed by lunch at a local pub or restaurant.
As some members need extra support and advice, particularly when getting started in painting, we have held small group workshops on Saturdays led by some of our most talented artists. During these, Members ask specific questions on painting methods and receive personal help with their paintings.
En plein air
In Spring and Summer we often paint oudoors in the local area. Sessions are arranged on an ad-hoc basis with a picnic or pub lunch; a great way to get to know each other better. Popular and enyoyable, they have helped us improve.
Members have arranged visits to various London Art galleries and special exhibitions including Manet and John Singer Sargent. This year we visited The National Gallery, Mall Galleries and The National Portrait Gallery and dined in ‘The Cafe in The Crypt’ at St Martin’s in The Fields.
Recently, we visited the studio of local artist James Merriott, and our excellent local gallery The Well House Gallery at Horndon-on-the-Hill where two of our members have recently exhibited sucessfully.
Members have full access to all pages of our extensive website. Pages include notes from tutorials, support media, archives of photographs, videos, WHAG news, advice on purchasing art materials, painting techniques, art genres, tutorial notes and much more. All Members have the opportunity to create a personal web page where they can showcase their paintings and create their own web pages on the subject of art.
Over the last 12 months we have had a presence on Facebook, where we can share articles on Art, favourite paintings and painters, upcoming exhibitions, photos from trips and tutorials, and flyers for our own exhibitions.
